A US local post fantasy printed by Hussey, listed in the 9th
Edition of Springer's "North American Cinderellas" (1980) at about
$1. |

You will find the info on this stamp in Scott's Specialized Catalogue of
american stamps. It is #117L1. It was issued in 1844. Stamp is listed as
a style #L233. Engraved by John E. Gavit, Albany, N.Y. (seen as 'GAVIT' in bottom part
of stamp).
I believe this is a private issue for New York State. It's listed in
Scott's Specialized US catalogue.
Pomeroy's Letter Express, local stamps issued in 1844 for use in
New York State, listed in Scott's US Specialized Catalog as 117L1-7,
valued between $1.50 and $5 (my catalog is old: 1990). This would be
117L5. |

#83, McIntire's City Express Post, New York, Established by William H. McIntire, N.Y., same Scott Catalog #99L1,
stamp style L207, issued 1859.
Another local post, listed in Scott's US Specialized as 99L1,
dated 1859, for use in New York City, $10.
A note about US Local Posts, which supplemented government posts
between 1844 and 1882 (sometimes illegally!); Scott's US Specialized
lists 165 posts, most quite rare because they were short-lived. Be
aware that most if not all of these have been forged extensively, and
also there are many bogus and fantasy issues masquerading as US
locals. |

Montreal, Canada, a local post dated 1863. This is listed in the
Springer catalog mentioned earlier at about $1 (remember it's an old
catalog). The fellow pictured on the stamp is S. Allan Taylor, the
most notorious faker of his time, so this is a fantasy. |

#85, Metropolitan Errand and Carrier Express Co., New York, N.Y.
Organized Aug. 1 1855, by Abraham M. Hinkley, Hiram Dixon, and others.
This is a reprint. original color was red orange.
Another US local, 1855, New York City, 107L1-10. 107L1, the 1c
value, is red-orange; blue is a reprint. |

#86, W. Wyman, Boston, Mass.
Established to carry mail between Boston and New York, Scott Specialized Catalog # 149L1, stamp style L281, issued
1844.
Another US local, 1844, used on mail from Boston to New York,
149L1 ($150 used), likely a fake but still a nice item. The original
color is black.
#86 This is certainly a fake - note the reversed 3 before Wall street...
there are at least 6 different basic fake types, and this one comes in at
least 10 papers/colors. |

Another Canadian local, 1864, Montreal, $6, another invention of
S. Allan Taylor. |

Operated by John W. S. Browne, Scott Specialized Catalog #29L2, stamp style #L85, issued 1852-55.
Another US local, 29L2, 1852-5, Cincinnati (Ohio), $100 used;
should be black. |
![]() #90 | Does anybody recognize these Russian surcharges? I cannot see them in
my catalogue. Your help would be much appreciated.

#90 is from the Far Eastern Republic, Scott's N1, as
occupation stamps under the leadership of General Semenov - Chita Issue.
Wrongly placed overprints are not uncommon, but command a small premium.
Value mint: $20.
As far as I can tell from my 1974 Stanley Gibbons Russian catalogue, that stamp, if genuine, would be
No. 11 of Siberia. It was issued during 1920 by the regime of the Ataman Semyonov, ruler of the
Transbaikal Province, with headquarters at Chita. The government lasted between 20 January 1920
and 21 October 1920. |
