Which town in the Netherlands issued this stamp?

Posted by Stefano on 02/03/98

ANSWERS:

# 71 is from Den Bosch. Stadspost Den Bosch issued 6 stamps on 26/5/1983 and 3 stamps (featuring don Bosco) on 1/9/1987 (all 3 about Don Bosco). Listed in "Catalogus van Nederlandse stadspostzegels" (1997 edition).

I would like to have any information about this provisional issue of Bangladesh.

Posted by Stefano on 12/03/98

ANSWERS:

According to the Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth catalogue:

'From 20 December 1971 various Pakistan issues were overprinted by local Postmasters, mainly using handstamps. Their use was permitted until 30 April 1973. These are of philatelic interest, but are outside the scope of this catalogue.'

To say they are of interest is an understatement. Given the large number of towns, cities & possibly villages, there must be a great variety of these, worth very careful study. Doubtless some overprints were in local language and alphabet. Probably listed in a specialised catalogue.
Ian Billings

The Tornow catalog lists 118 different handstamps in this format (capital "B" for Bangladesh); together with handstamps in all caps, in Bengali, and combinations of English/Bengali, there must be 600+ different. If you can provide the width of the overprint in mm, I can possibly determine the town, although there are many that are difficult to distinguish.
Rick Scott

#72 Bangladesh. There is indeed a fuller listing of these than in Tornow, but not in a catalogue. Max Smith has done a full listing of these in Head Offices of Bangladesh which ran in 27 parts in India Post from Jan 1989 to July 1997.

This appears to be a revenue stamp of some sort. I would like to know its specific purpose and when it was used.

ANSWERS:

This is indeed a Venice city revenue for tourism.

This is listed in Scott as Venezia Giulia #ILNE1 (1946) but there is no listing for a variety with a double overprint. Could someone let me know if this variety is listed in any catalogue and let me know an approximate value?

Posted by Derrick Grose on 12/03/98

ANSWERS:

According to Catalogo Unificato (1990 edition) this double overprint variety (#1Ea), mint, has a value of 175.000 Lire (approximately 100 US$, please don't laugh at our many zeroes). Sassone in 1997 gives a value of 650.000 Lire or 360 US$. Such an increase is not absolutely due to inflation which was as low as 2% yearly.

What is this? Probably issued in Hungary in 1939 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Istvŕn king of Hungary, it has a face value of 5 fillér.

Posted by Stefano on 01/04/98

ANSWERS:

#75 is definitely a label celebrating the anniversary of King (later Saint) Stephen.
Thomas M. Fortunato

Stamp #75: I would agree with your assumptions but your dates are wrong - the stamp is dated "1038 - 1938". No stamp sized labels are listed in my Hungarian catalogue.

What is this? Where is it from?

Posted by Stefano on 01/04/98

ANSWERS:

This is very similar in appearance to the railway parcel stamps from Britain, Australia and New Zealand. So may be something similar to the old Railway Express Agency in the United States. (D... U... Transport Company?)
Bruce Brunell

#76 is a Dublin United Tramways Co. parcels ticket from the turn of the century.

What is this? Where is it from? I have two more similar stamps: an orange one with 3-16 as value (if it is a value), and a green 2-8 picturing a sort of sphynx.

ANSWERS:

For what it's worth, I found a similar stamp in an envelope of Greek cinderellas. I probably bought it from a collector who had identified it as Greek, but as to whether that's correct...?

I believe this to be a pre WWII revenue stamp having to do with libraries. It is listed in the DeMagistris catalog which lists this revenue stamp as being for the Opera Nazionale Balilla. I cannot imagine how they were used. They may have paid the amusement tax on the tickets.

"Marche per Quaderni" stamp: Quarterly tax on wages on legal folios; 5˘/20 pages, ~1935...
Paul Luchter (19 Sep 99)

#77 This is indeed a Italian revenue stamp Marche per Quaderni 1935. Listed in the revenue catalogue by Paolo De Magistris.

Despite its awful conservation I would like to know if this is a postage stamp or not. The writings around the sitting lady say "Imposto do sello".

ANSWERS:

A Brasilian revenue for receipts and checks, issued in either 1893 or 1904 according to color shade, listed by Forbin.
Rick Scott

Stamp #78. I cannot be certain but my guess would be that it is a Brazilian revenue stamp from some time around 1900 - 1920. (It is inscribed "Brazil" while after about 1918 stamps from there began to be inscribed "Brasil").

On this provisional handstamped tax stamp from Hungary one can clearly read "Porto", but what's above it? To me it looks "A.V. 2". Any idea about its meaning?

Posted by Stefano on 01/04/98

ANSWERS:

My copies show "NV2", but I have not idea what it means.
