This Norwegian item is postmarked in Kirkenes and reads "Slutt opp om" and "Lands-foreningen/mot kreft". What does that mean,
what was this for? It seems to be a 1951 postmark...

A Ceylon stamp overprinted "Oriental"...What is this? When was it issued and used? And where?
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 28 September 99 |
ANSWERS:
The Oriental Fire and General Insurance Company in Bombay used ORIENTAL as
a perfin on Indian stamps for many years. Overprints is sometimes used for
the same purpose as perfins.
#343 ORIENTAL - This was used as an overprint, rather than a perfin, also on
revenue stamps of Travancore. But the overprint there is larger than this
one. | |

they were for, if they still are in use, or even if this is one of
them..
This stamp reads "USUI Seisha-Japan" at the bottom....any ideas on what this is, when it was used? And of any catalogs or articles on these various export stamps and how they were used and by whom..etc?

This is a very pretty attraction pictured on this stamp- I wonder if
it still exists.. It reads: "Riviera-Nice/promenade des Anglais et Palais de la jetée" and in an imprint at the bottom: "Carl Jenson & Schwidernoch, Wien"...What was this and where was it issued and sold? Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 28 September 99 |
ANSWERS:
The building in stamp #346 doesn't exist any more. However, you can still find
similar "pavillons" in other European coast towns, for instance, in England (Channel coast) and Germany
(Baltic Sea).
This is merely a souvenier label. The firm of Jensen and Schwidernoch in Vienna produced countless thousands of beautiful
labels for souvenirs, commemoration of events and charities. Sometimes the "stamps" repeat themselves in the sheets in five
or more different colours. A famous production of this firm was the United Kindom issue commemorating the Coronation of
King George V and Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, in 1911. The street vendors made a fortune out of unofficial copies of
the label... ordered from the firm. I have their price lists from about 1907 together with sheets of their sample labels.
Their productions all have ornate frames, like the illustrated example.

An Austrian item perhaps? "Pressepende/deutschböhmischer/volksanzeiger" on top & "Haida Leitmeritz" on bottom...Who can tell more?
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 28 September 99 |
ANSWERS:
"Pressespende" would mean "press donation". The
"Deutsch-boehmischer Volksanzeiger" (German-Bohemian People's Announcer) was
undoubtedly a newspaper. Haida and Leitmeritz were German-populated cities,
later in the "Sudetenland". Leitmeritz was on the border to the Czech-populated
region of Bohemia at the time. Perhaps the newspaper needed voluntary support
because it lacked readers? I would date it as Austro-Hungarian.
Extra info: Haida and Leitmeritz are today in Czech Republic.
Haida was called Bor Uceske Lipy until 1946 and Novy Bor after 1946.
Leitmeritz is Litomerice since 1918.

This item reads "K" and a triangle (maybe a Sigma), two candles and a flower...Any
clues as to what this was, where it was used and when? A true mystery...
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 28 September 99 |
ANSWERS:
I have a similar one saying "Give for" and includes the K and sigma. It pictures a holly
leaf and berries, suggesting a Christmas connection. I would say your flower is a
poinsettia. | |
