These stamps appear to be Norwegian and Danish citypost stamps. Does anyone know in what catalogue they can be found? From what year are they?

Posted by Casper on 10/12/97

ANSWERS:

These are Scandinavian locals, for which I've used Hurt-Williams "Handbook of the Private Local Posts" (ca 1950).

#27 - Kolding (Denmark) #3 (1888)
#27A - Trondhjem (Norway) #35 (1887)
#27B - Viborg (Denmark) #7 (1887)
#27C - Viborg (Denmark) #11 (1888)
Rick Scott

Although I've come late to this, the issue dates on your Danish items are:
27 16 July 1888
27B 6 July 1887
27C 1890
These dates are from the DAKA catalogue (1996), and the cat. numbers are 3, 9 and 16 respectively.
Hurt & Williams is no longer used by collectors of this material. DAKA is the latest catalogue, but Christiansen & Ringstrom has a lot of background information (and much on printing varieties).
27A is more difficult. This stamp was printed by lithography, but using 2 stones. The distinction is a break in the circle round the numeral at west (using the compass!) on stone 1. I can't see on the scan whether the break is there or not (as it's under the postmark). The stone 1 printing was in May 1887 in brownish-yellow and the stone 2 in May 1891 (lemon-yellow) or May 1893 (mustard-yellow - whatever that's meant to mean!).
My source for this is Jurgen Tiemer (1984) in the German Scandinavia Study Group newsletter.

Italy never had a post office in Tangier (Maroc) even though the italian consulate in Tangier tried at least three times to gain authorization by the italian mail to issue its own stamps. I know that in one occasion a few stamps were printed. Could this be one of them? Otherwise I have serious doubts that this is just another fantasy creation. Can anyone help?

ANSWERS:

This is a bogus pictorial issue of Morocco. It is listed by Alnis Guide to the local Posts of Morocco (printed in U.K. 1993 edition).

It's a set issued in 1907 , consisting of 5 different stamps (5c 10c 20 c 30c 50 c), and also 5 more stamps surcharged with extra value, plus one variety of 20c. (imperforated at right).
They exist with 3 different cancels: Casablanca/Maroc and Tanger/Maroc, plus another not clear.
Fabio Vaccarezza

The latest book on Morocco is by Jean Haik. He favours the view that these are bogus. He says they are known with 3 cancels. One is Tanger 3.5.1907 (always the same day) and the others are Casablanca or Oujda (in each case with the date illegible).
Jean runs the Societé de Postes Locales du Maroc and can be contacted on jean.haik@hol.fr

What is it? Where is it from?

Posted by Stefano on 17/12/97

ANSWERS:

#29 is some type of Postage Saving Stamp from Republic of China era. The face value is five dollars. I think it may have been issued before Republic of China government moved to Taiwan. The translation from the top is "Saving to build the country postage saving stamp" under line it says "Republic China Postal Service".
Ray Chen's philatelic page

#29 is a Chinese Postal Savings Definitive Issue with a portrait of President Lin Sen. Printed in typography by Central Trust in Chungking in 1944. Perforated 13. Four values were issued, 50 c. red, $1 green, $2 blue and this one $5 brown. I am using a catalog called "Postal Savings Stamps of China", issued in 1956 by China-Stamps in Hindmarsh, South Australia. This is catalog number 106.

Something tells me this one comes from China. I just can't find it on any catalogue. The paper of this stamp is very thin, I don't think that it's a postal stationery cut out.

ANSWERS:

#30 is People's Republic of China, listed under Michel Nordwest-China - Volksrepublik "#82". 1949 Oct 15 issued with no gum and imperf.
Ray Chen's philatelic page

This stamp was issued by the Northwest China regional authorities of the People's Republic of China. After the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949 and before the Beijing central government could assert authority over the whole country, many regions of China issued regional issues.
