What is BCR label? A railroad?
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 24 March 2000 |
ANSWERS:
#73 I would hazard a guess that it is a railway stamp and if so it may be from British Africa... but only a "gut" feeling.
Have seen this listed before as a private issue of British Cash Registers.

Vincent Pallotti-who is he, who issued this 1950 label?
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 24 March 2000 |
ANSWERS:
Regarding your question on Vincent Pallotti: St Vincent Pallotti, the priest asked by Cardinal Wiseman to
establish St Peter's, was born in Rome in 1795 and ordained priest in 1818. The label is definitely Italian in origin however I don't know from where.

I think I have a set of the blue stamp. It says Deutscher Wehrschatz (I am unsure of third
letter, second word), and also says Südmark... the cancel is partial. What can this be? It
seems to picture a Viking, maybe he is a Saxon.
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 24 March 2000 |
ANSWERS:
"Deutscher Wehrschatz" = "German defense tax"?
Graz is a town in south-east Austria, the capital of "Bundesland" Steiermark.
Austria used the Heller (100 Heller=1 Krone) currency during the years 1900-1925.
I'm not sure about Südmark, it could be a part of Steiermark,
but I can't find the name on any map.
The history of Austria is complicated.
Before WW1 the Austrian Empire consisted of parts of current
Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Roumania, Slovenia, Italy and more.
When the empire collapsed in 1918,
only the German parts were left (with a few exceptions)
and the republic "German-Austria" was created.
In 1922 the name was changed to Austria.
So the word "German" (if it's OK to make more guesses) probably
means the German parts of Austria.
This (local revenue?) stamp was probably issued sometime between 1918-20.
This is from the immediate post-WWI period. Suedmark (Southern Marches) was
a term for the area between the Austrian city of Graz and the (now) Slovenian of
Ljubljana. The area had a mixed German/Slovene population, but was one province
of Austria until 1918. Wehrschatz would be a protection tax levied on the German
population to set up some sort of provincial defense corps -- i.e., an armed
group to make sure the whole province didn't become part of Yugoslavia. Hitler
warmed up the name Suedmark again in 1941 after the invasion Yugoslavia.
Slovenia was divided between Germany and Italy at that time.
#76 This stamp was issued in the period of 1910/1915
and exists in excess of 10 colors. During this era there were any number of similar issues
which were fund raisers for various German "Bund" organizations, German language schools,
hiking clubs, sports clubs, para-military etc, Building funds. These were not only issued
in the Austrian part of the Empire, but also in the Bohemia Moravia. The cancel seems to
indicate some sort of use from a "Technical School in GRAZ. Many hundreds of stamps with
various designs were issued, and when colors are considered-- the numbers rise to the
thousands. | |

A two sided Russian stamp- Red Cross? What is this?
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 24 March 2000 |
ANSWERS:
#C77 looks to me like a Youth Red Cross membership due stamp
from the Soviet Union. I wish the scan would show more detail
of the inscription.
This is Russian Red Cross Society membership fees (10k for school
childen). Date of issue 1970. The previous 1961 issue had "196.." for
year on the reverse which was changed for "19.." in the 1970 issue. Also
both issues exist for adult members at 30k rate (see images attached)

What is this French item? A revenue? A cutout from an envelope imprint? What and when? All it says is "Cen 5/Timbre Imperial./Seine".
Posted by Paul S. Luchter on 15 May 2000 |
ANSWERS:
In my Forbin Revenue catalogue there is a similar stamp. It matches your copy but has the figure 59 instead of the word Seine.
The copy mentioned in the catalogue is a provisional for the normally stamped paper revenues.
Hence I think your stamp must be a stamped paper.
In an auction lot with Russian Stocks from the 1880-1910 period I saw the same stamp as you have.
It was used to denominate the Russian stocks in France.
