This stamp is surely from Israel as it pictures the Western Wall in Jerusalem. What is it exactly, a propaganda label maybe?

Posted by Vagn Andersen on 25 November 99

ANSWERS:

The stamp depicted in question #C21 is a Jewish National Fund (JNF) label, issued in 1940. It is from a set of 4 values, Kaplove catalogue numbers 381-384. These stamps were issued to protest the White Paper restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine. The inscription is :"If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its cunning".

Overprint "Béla Szekula Luzern" on a stamp from Switzerland. Any hint?

Posted by Vagn Andersen on 25 November 99

ANSWERS:

This looks like a dealer's private advertising overprint. Bela Szekula was a notoriously disreputable stamp dealer. He was born in Budapest in 1881 and moved to Geneva in 1902. Once various dealings came to light, he moved back to Budapest in 1904. By 1916, however, he was back in Switzerland (Luzern, this time). His main dealings seem to have been in dubious reprints and forgeries (especially issues of Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Bolivia and Belgium. The Union of Swiss Philatelic Societies managed to force him out of business in about 1938. For further information, see 'Philatelic Forgers, their lives and works' by Varro Tyler (1991) and the further references listed there.

A chinese stamp from 1948-51, 250 yuan, I don't think this is a normal stamp. Can anybody help?

Posted by Vagn Andersen on 25 November 99

ANSWERS:

#23 Peoples Republic of China Revenue Stamp listed in PAAU catalog.
Bill Weinberger (05 May 00)

Not a revenue but a normal postage stamp of the liberated area of NE China, Michel #100. The 250 yuan is the highest denomination of a set of 3 issued on 1 May 1948 but withdrawn the same day because of wrong inscription of the communist slogan: "Proletarians of all countries stand up" instead of unite.

Narod Sobé,  401 - 6 k. I don't know it this is a stamp, I don't think so. I don't even know where does it come from.

Posted by Vagn Andersen on 25 November 99

ANSWERS:

C28 "Narod Sobe" is the logo of the Czech National Theatre. It means: "the nation for itself". It is written in large letters over the stage and stems from around 1860 to 1880 when the Czech lands were part of Austria (well Austria-Hungary). The people of Bohemia and Moravia donated money for the construction of a theatre for performances in Czech -- as opposed to the predominantly German-language theatres in the country at the time. An official society was founded to collect money for the theatre. School kids collected pennies. People donated money in pubs, etc. Most likely, this stamp was produced by the society dedicated to constructing the Czech National Theatre. I think "6 K" means 6 "Krajcaru" ("Kreutzer" in German), (100 Kreutzer = 1 Gulden at the time). The original National Theatre burnt down shortly after opening in 1881. The Czechs reacted to the catastrophe by launching a new and very successful collection drive (collecting 1 million Gulden in just 47 days) and reconstructed the theatre. It still graces a prominent site on Narodni Street here in Prague and is a splendid building to say the least. For more information: http://www.anet.cz/nd/anglicky/ndhist.html

Verviers, 60 Francs on overprint. It must be from France but what is it? A local stamp?

Posted by Vagn Andersen on 25 November 99

ANSWERS:

Verviers is a small city in the French speaking part of Belgium. As in every city or community in Belgium people has to pay a certain tax when they are asking the community-administration for sealed documents. The tax is depending of the city and of the purpose where the document is used for. In earlier days all cities used their own stamps as this item.
Joseph Van Stappen (09 Jun 2000)

Verviers is not in France but in Belgium in the district of Liege. It's not a local post stamp but a local tax stamp.
